CD Tutorial
by GEDA.

This cd tutorial is made for PhotoShop 5.5 & 6.0.  If you prefer to practice this tutorial offline you are welcome to download our pdf-file here.

Step  Description
1

New image size 300x300.   Fill with your background color.

2

Create a new layer.
Use your circle tool,  and make a circle.   Fill with black. Make a smaller circle for the middle part and hit delete.

You should have a shape like this:

3

Create a new layer.
Use your rectangle marquee tool,  and mark half of the circle image to make a gradient fill like the image below (from top to bottom).  You can use the gradient called spectrum in PS or make a new one with what color you like the best.

And you will get something like this:

4

Go to Edit - Transform - Skew and move the corners together like the picture below.

Mark your black circle layer and hold your ctrl key then click the layer to select your circle.  Take shift - ctrl - I to invert your selection, then hit delete to have the image look like below.

5

Duplicate your deformed gradient layer.  Go to Edit - Transform - Flip Horizontal, move the image on place.   Merge the 2 gradient layer then duplicate the layer and go to Edit - Transform 90 degree. Move the gradient layer on place.

Now you will have an image like this one below.

6

Now it's time to make the 3 circles you see on the image below.  Start with the white then the black and last a white small circle in the middle. Make sure to make each circle on their own layer.

The last thing you do is delete the middle part on each circle, make a small circle placed in the middle then hit delete on each circle/layer. See image below.

  1.  Now we will put a stroke around the circles.  Start with the gradient circle.  Mark the layer hold your ctrl key down and click the gradient layer to select the shape.  Go to Select - Modify - Expand 2-3 pixels.  Make a new layer below your gradient circle and fill with black.

  2.  Next is the white big circle, mark the layer, set the opacity down to ca. 45-50.  Then  hold your ctrl key and click on the white layer to select the circle.  Make a new layer - Go to Edit - Stroke 1 pixel (black) - center.  Play with the Opacity to make it look smooth.

  3.  Last mark your white little circle then use your magic want to select the small circle in the middle. Go to Edit - Stroke 1 pixel (black) - center.  Go down a bit on the opacity till it looks smooth.

Now it's time to add a photo of your own choice to the cd.  Their is many different ways to clean your photo from backgrounds etc.  If you prefer to do that I have wrote down some tips

Tips on how you can clean your photo:

  1.  You can use your lasso tool and mask around the picture. Go to Select - Feather - I use setting 8 - Invert your selection (shift - ctrl - I ) and hit delete.

  2.  You can also use your paintbrush and erase the part you don't want on the photo.  I prefer to use a big brush to have it to look like it's faded.

  3.  Or you can add a mask as I did on this photo,  and fade it into the gradient shape.

When you are finished. Make a new layer for your photo above your gradient layer.  Move the photo around to find a place you like then ctrl/click your black shape layer to select the cd - Take shift - ctrl - I  to Inverse your selection and hit delete, make sure you have the photo layer marked.  Play around with the opacity on the photo and the gradient layers.  I added a white circle up on the gradient then played around with the opacity to make it a bit more shiny.

Original photo color.                    Colorized photo with
                                                                  Hue/Saturation.

To finish my cd I played around with the colors and added a bit drop shadow and VIOLA.

Tips:
If you get a bit jaggedie shape on your image, use a small setting of Gassuian Blur to get ride of it.
